Thu, 28 December 2006 ![]() Kensington is my home, and so it is surprising I have not done a Kensington walk before now. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea stretches from the River Thames in the South to Notting Hill and North Kensington in the North. It is a large area. The part we are walking through is the wealthiest. Even the smallest houses, of which there are very few, now cost in excess of £1million (currently US $1.93 million). The walk starts at High Street Kensington Underground station, which is on the Circle and District lines (zone 1). There are also many buses which serve this premier shopping area. We start by walking east, and turning down Derry Street, named after one of the partners in the Derry & Toms department store that once occupied the site. Its successor Barkers of Kensington has just closed down. The building is partly occupied by one of London's evening newspapers, and the store will become an organic food shop. There is a wonderful roof garden which you can visit. It belongs to Sir Richard Branson's Virgin. For opening hours and contact details, visit the Roof Gardens web site. There are three themed gardens covering 1.5 acres 100 ft above street level. During the walk we wander through two of Kensington's oldest squares dating from the mid 17th century and beyond. There is a wealth of interest in this walk, which takes less than an hour. At the end, you have the option of shopping in High Street Kensington, visiting Holland Park, or eating at one of Kensington's restaurants or cafes. Comments[12] |
I've downloaded your London Walks podcast on my iPod. I have been living in London (originally from Greece) for over 7 years now, but with your podcasts I feel like a tourist again!
Up to now I've taken your Soho and your Kensington walks and I've discovered things I didn't know before... I have enjoyed especially the Kensington walk, the place is amazing and with your commentary it was very interesting.
Today I will take your Legal walk (it is a cold and snowy day, let's see how I manage that!) and on Saturday, with a double jack on the iPod, I'm taking a friend through the Riverside walk...
When my mother arrives in April, I am going to show off, taking her around London and giving her all the details, hehe ;)
I am overwhelmed by this experience, and my only comment is that you walk very fast for me, sometimes I have to pause my player to catch up! Or maybe I'm a slow walker myself.
Keep up the fab work, and expect a donation from me soon...
Regards,
Marietta

I have come across your website while researching for a feature on Literary London - I am studying Journalism at Birkbeck College/ London (...) Since I don't live far from Kensington High Street underground station I started by doing the "Kensington Walk". I happened to make the wrong turn in St.Alban's Gardens (past the pub on the corner) and into Kensington Court only to find T.S. Elliot had lived there! (blue plaque) That was an added bonus!
I found your diction and tone most pleasant to listen to, and the itinerary extremely well chosen - I truly enjoyed. No doubt I will end up walking all the talks - Why spend so much money on exotic destinations, with so many new worlds to discover at my doorstep?
Please keep up the good work. A small donation, as suggested, will be sent to you in due time not just in appreciation for your sterling work but to ensure that the same is not withdrawn from the Internet for lack of funds.
Kindest regards
Al
PS The street names I mentioned, were quoted from memory!

We've had so much pleasure from listening to your London walks.
If you ever decide on a French walk, I shall make our forest cottage freely available for you.

Kensington has been my choice today. I knew High Street, but I had never walked about the streets, which is always better. As I expected, it has been a wonderful walk, most of the buildings are really well preserved and they keep this typical English charm, both the small houses in the mews and the big estates. London is still giving me surprises, like Kensington Square or the tranquillity of St Alban's Grove with its beautiful shops.
